Today, the Houston Chronicle, which heard no evil, saw no evil, nor wrote no evil about the former Mayor Lee Brown, his light rail schemes, his Main Street "signature boulevard" scheme, or anything else, published that the City of Houston's pension scheme is now $1.5 billion in the hole, not $1 billion as published a couple of days ago. Mayor Bill White has ruled out property tax hikes, which would be political suicide. The preferred scheme for dealing with this matter seems to involve floating bonds.
One memorable quote I forgot to post was from former At Large Council member, now City Controller Annise Parker. At the end of the original story, Ms. Parker was quoted as saying:
"It's not a matter of assessing blame," she [Annise Parker] said. "But the Brown administration just kind of said we would leave it to the next mayor to figure out."
To readers of my weblog: I direct you to my February 8, 2004 entry into this weblog about my thoughts on term limits. In addition, I also direct you to my entry about Irresponsibility in Politics, found on my Janurary 28, 2004 entry.
If you are a City of Houston resident, I also direct you to look at my Houston links to the Let The People Vote campaign, and to retired Controller Bob Lemer's site found at Citizens for Public Accountability.
Good night and pleasant dreams... that is, if I decide to use my powers to visit you with some NIGHTMARES! (With hideous, evil laughter being heard in the background!)
